Was it compulsory to give credit card/ debit card details when joining PSN?

I can't remember if I gave the card details or not, but if it wasn't compulsory, I definitely would not have done it. Would like to know if it was compulsory or not to put my mind at ease, given the recent hacking incident. Incidentally, I bought PSN vouchers when buying things.
